Janaki Balakrishnan, P.Eng. graduated from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka obtaining B.Sc. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering in 1977. She completed her M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Currently Janaki is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

She is presently employed by Toronto Hydro and engineer responsible for distributed generation and protection & controls. She is the President of Transnational Diaspora Network for Development Canada - TDND Canada, a charity international development organization for sustainable development. She has worked in National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Sri Lanka, Consulting Engineering Firms in Toronto and has taught at Universities and Colleges in Sri Lanka and Canada.

Her current interest is international development in distributed generation installations using renewable energy sources. She presented papers at IEEE conferences ICIIS2006 and ICIIS2007 held in Sri Lanka, EPC07 held in Montreal, Canada and ICIAfS2007 held in Australia. She presented a paper at ICIIS2008 in West Bengal India in December 2008. She has also served on the International Advisory Committee of ICIIS2007. She made a presentation on Fuel Cells at the “Climate for Change Symposium” held by OSPE in October 2008.

Janaki has also served Professional Engineers of Ontario in 1990s holding various positions including the position of Chair in the Willowdale/Thornhill chapter.
