Visit to Sacred Heart Catholic School, May 15th, 2009

Reporter - Kwame Johnson - PEO SC Education Coordinator

Scarborough Chapter education coordinator visited Sacred Heart Catholic School to conduct an engineering activity in collaboration with school teachers Barbara Clifford and Jean Pinto.

45 children from grades 2/3 in one class and grades 3/4 from another class participated in this wonderful event.

The activity planned was to build marshmallow towers. This activity was conducted to help the children understand the concept of structures and mechanisms. The kids worked in groups and learnt how to assemble different components to build a structure. During this process they understood the concepts of structure strength, stability and the factors that affect them.

The visit lasted about an hour and all the kids were excited and energetic about the activity. The teachers were greatly appreciative of the visit.

Appreciation by School Teacher

Hi Kwame,

Thank you for coming in and giving us some information on Engineers. You could see and hear how much the students enjoyed it. Gerianne told me she knew their structure would stand because they were using triangles. It was interesting to see the dynamics between some of the group members as well. Good Luck in your chosen career.
