The Scarborough Chapter arranged a workshop on "Excel for Accounting" as part of a training program to Chapter Volunteers, on 10th July 2009. The intent of this programme is to train active volunteers by sharing the knowledge of the experience engineers.

Active volunteers of the chapter, members of other East Central chapters, Councillors attended the workshop (a total of 20 attendees)
Our thanks to the Pastor SYd Taekema of Marketplace Ministries Computer Centre, 1071 Midland Avenue, Scarborough for allowing the use of their training facilities and Solange Barbieri - teacher of the training center, who also participated in the workshop, for all the arrangements done to make the event a success.
Scarborough chapter proposes to continue this activity on a regular basis.

Madu Suthanan (Madu) is the current Vice-Chair of PEO, Scarborough Chapter.
For the last few years he has been successfully mentoring a number of EIT’s and International Engineering Graduates, (IEGs) for the Mentoring Partnership Program through ACCES, Scarborough.
He proposed the “Volunteer Retention Program” in order to “Give something back” to the volunteers by way of training and group discussions which would help them to upgrade and keep current their skills for gainful engineering employment and career enhancement. The program would also help them to better perform their volunteer duties to the Chapter and PEO.
Excel for Accounting Applications is the first of the series of Training and group discussion programs planned by the Chapter.

The seminar was well presented by N. (Madu) Suthanan, P.Eng., Vice Chair, PEO Scarborough Chapter. The seminar of “Excel for accounting” is very helpful for learning the various commands of Excel for Accounting work and it is very interesting. By using various commands of Excel the accounting work become very easy and also very time saving.
The seminar also provided basic fundamental concept of Accounting and provided basic equation of Accounting in terms of Asset, Liability, Capital/Equity. The seminar also provided some useful information of limitation (risk) and advantage of doing Accounting by use of Excel compared to Accounting software like QuickBooks, Simply accounting etc.
The seminar provided basics of the PEO Chapter Accounting requirements and how they can be maintained in Excel for the various types of reports required for use within chapters.
