Event Report

By Asogan Narayanapillai, P.Eng. – Secretary, Scarborough Chapter.

Mathletics is an event initiated by Professional Engineers Ontario - Scarborough Chapter with a view to develop an aptitude to engineering for young school children.

Questions are designed by group of volunteers on application of simple mathematics in every day life where Engineering could be identified - well it is everywhere and in almost everything we look at like household appliances, our cars, house etc.

Children and parents/teachers enjoy this event as parent/teachers also try the questions from back benches, and our honoured VIP's for the event also were trying out a hand at it. (as seen in some of the pictures).

The Scarborough Chapter started this event since 2007 at chapter level and initiated a move to expand it Province wide. Scarborough Chapter also provided all the technical assistance required to conduct the chapter level Mathletics at London, Grand River and Mississauga chapters apart from the chapter level event in Scarborough. This was the first Province Level Mathletics event which had the participation of four chapters of PEO stretching from Grand River in the West to Scarborough in the East, making it a great success.

Several volunteers worked for months together in creating a question bank, checking and re-checking questions and answers, arranging the data bank for projection, etc. Finally on the day of the event over 20 volunteers worked for organizing the venue, arrangements of all Audio/Visual equipment, registering the participants, printing out the certificates on the spot as the computer analyzed the scores and winners were determined.
